Eclipse CVS Feature

Posted in Programming at 2:13 am by Todd

Found a new feature that appears to be un-documented in Eclipse. Based upon this description, you can paste a CVS connection string into the Add CVS Repository screen to make setting up a CVS root easier.

Survival

[Editor's Note: Sorry this is so late but I had troubles with my hosting account and the image gallery that the pictures are stored in.]

So, I have survived my insane decision of running in my first, and likely only, 5K run. It was actually quite fun running with two of my great friends Adam and Ben Dolezal. It turns out that I knew some other people that were running (Matt Hoosier (co-worker), Georg Jung (co-worker), John Klabunde (childhood neighbor), and Travis Say (high school friend)).

Todd, Adam, and Ben after the race.

Happy Birthday to Me

Posted in Family at 12:26 am by Todd

Because it was my birthday yesterday, my wife, the wonderful Kari, decorated to help make the day special for me. So instead of boosting my confidence or stroking my ego she decided to remind me just how old I am getting (and provide a subtle reminder that she is much younger).

My BDay Decorations

She worked in collusion with the front office staff of the CIS department who decorated my office with black and white streamers and very manly pink balloons.

So happy birthday to me. I am now old enough that people tease me about my age.

Interesting Software Engineering Discussion

Posted in Programming, SAnToS at 3:39 am by Todd

Since I am a regular reader of Joel On Software, I have heard the theory that starting from scratch is a very bad idea. I do not necessarily subscribe to this theory (the proof being my complete re-write of Bandera), but it is an interesting theory and probably a good guide in many situations.

The reason I bring this up is because I found an intersting discussion taking place in the GForge forums about a re-write of GForge from scratch. I found this while investigating a possible time sink for me (upgrading our existing GForge server) and it got my attention for way too long (so I will try to get others to waste their time reading the discussion in an attempt to assuage my guilt).

[Quick tangent, I get really annoyed when people use poor communication in forums. I don't mind when the person doesn't have a complete grasp of English. What annoys me is the lack of capitalization, punctuation, and structure (really, is it that hard to put a space in between words).]

I found it quite interesting that so many people are in favor of a re-write. It got me to wonder, how many of these people will actually be involved in the re-write? If someone asked me if they should re-write it I would probably say yes. But if I had to pour my effort into it, I would want to analyze the drawbacks more. For example, what do we get out of a re-write that we don’t have now? Or what will we get that cannot be with several refactors? How much time will this take? I guess my only point is, the discussion, and decision, should probably be based upon more facts about risk/reward than preference and I saw very little of that.

So, the conclusion to the story is … well, none. I just found it interesting and wanted to share. And, I am still not sure about upgrading GForge. Maybe my esteemed colleagues will be able to help.

My Adventure in Website Design

Posted in Family, Programming at 2:04 am by Todd

Back in the old days (ok, maybe not old days considering how young I really am), I used to do some website development. When I was doing it on a regular basis, I was able to whip-up a website that looked decent in a few minutes. But now, it seems so much more painful because I start worrying about standards, consistent look, branding, and download speed. I guess I am starting to miss the days of ignorance and that cowboy spirit (just get’er done).

Anyway, I have started to help my neighbors (who are becoming very close friends) develop their website. They are starting to really push on their music careers and I am planning on doing everything in my power to help them succeed (web development is pretty much the extent of my powers that are applicable to their situation). So, you should see the site evolve over the next couple of months as I start the design process (to get a nice look-and-feel … or branding) and start adding more application "stuff" as it becomes necessary (things like image gallery, blog, mailing lists, etc.).

So, if you like a mellow style of music (think Caedmon’s Call, Jars of Clay, Cindy Morgan), check them out. And if you don’t like that style of music, check them out anyway. You can listen to a couple of songs right now on their old website (at least until we get the DNS forwarding figured out).
