The Wonderful World of Replay

Posted in Sports at 9:27 am by Todd

I just got around to watching the replay of the Oregon-OU football game “replay incident”. I found this on YouTube and it confirmed my suspicion … that the officials and the replay officials blew it big time. First, they missed the play in real-time. I can understand that it is very hard to see everything that happens during a chaotic event like the onside kick. But it seemed like they just didn’t want to find where the ball was located once they signalled the play dead. Second, the replay officials really messed up. They not only missed the player touching it early (seems pretty obvious from two angles) but they also missed the fact that an OU player came away from the the play with the ball.

Since this seemed to be such a big deal I figured I would look around to see if I could find the Pac-10 replay rules. What I found certainly enforced my opinion that the replay officials got it wrong. I wondered if there might be some rule about not being able to review a play and call a penalty when one was not called on the field (I think this is how the NFL replay rule works). I also wondered if they could not review a conflict of possesion call. From what I can tell from this document, both are reviewable and thus could have been fixed. This opinion is a direct conflict of what USA Today had to say about it (they don’t think the possesion was reviewable).

Funny Quote from This Morning

Posted in Politics at 7:49 pm by Todd

I heard something funny on my drive into work this morning.  I was listening to snippets of an interview of President Clinton as he talked about the current debate on interrogation methods (using that term you can easily see which side I stand on) and he said something along the lines of “We live in a land of laws and nobody is above those laws.”  I found this amusing because my first thought went back to when he was being questioned about having relations with Monica Lewinsky.  I was thinking about how easily he lied about their relationship and how he seemed to believe he was above the law.  Anyway, just thought it was funny and hoped others might find it just as funny.
And to be fair, it looks like his famous quote about “not having sexual relations…” was not an out-right lie since their was a a wonderfully abstract definition of sexual relations (although I don’t know how much faith to put into this text since this seems to be their source).

Hi, my name is Todd and I am a Transpector

Posted in About Me at 7:35 pm by Todd

I find it interesting to read about other people’s personality and find that I share many things in common with them. I find it even more interesting when they are able to describe a portion of my personality in a way that I have never thought through. This is all to say that I have recently learned that I use a technique that others refer to as transpection.

So, it looks like I am a transpector. What this means is that I tend to perform a process of inspecting other people’s ideas by placing myself into their position. I do this by asking questions and thinking them through in a internalized fashion. As James points out in his blog, some people don’t like be transpected and I will have to agree with him. This means that I need to try harder to understand when I am doing it and attempt to find ways to make it less offensive. I don’t want to give up this method because I feel I have been able to learn a great deal this way.

With all that said, I should also apologize publicly to all those that I have transpected. If I caused you harm by transpecting you, I am truly sorry. For those of you who enjoyed it, you may want to seek help.
